Believe it or not, there are essential oils for ringworm infections that are safe and effective in dogs.
Let’s clear things out first. First of all, ringworms are not really worms. It is a fungal infection. Ringworm infections happen in humans and dogs alike no thanks to a group of fungi called dermatophytes. This skin condition acquired its name because of how it appears on the skin of its host – it is ring-like in shape and is reddish or pinkish.
Dermatophytes feed on the hair’s keratin, that’s why infected dogs have circular bald spots that later on develop into lesions. The dermatophytes eat the keratin from the inside to outside thus creating a circular bald spot, which will later on expose raised red bumps. While these ringworm spots are not itchy, they can get inflamed.

Coconut oil is a common and arguably the best carrier oil and is often mixed with other oils. Rich in anti-microbial properties, coconut oil has long been used in treating ringworm infections and other fungal diseases.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is known for its anti-fungal and antibacterial properties. It is used in a lot of different skin issues. Holistic health enthusiasts believe that tea tree oil is the most effective essential oils when it comes to battling fungal infection. Tea tree oil is potent so remember to dilute it in a carrier oil before putting it on the skin.
Licorice Root Oil
Compared to Tea Tree Oil, Licorice Root Oil is gentle and is safe to put on broken skin. This essential oil has many anti-fungal properties that promotes wound-healing. Despite being gentle, it is still needed to dilute this oil with a carrier oil. Be careful not to put this oil in the eyes.
Neem Oil is also one effective essential oil. Not only does it help in fighting fungi, it also helps lessen pain. Neem Oil can be directly applied on the skin.
Even in dogs, Oregano has a lot of benefits. Oregano Oil contains many anti-fungal and antibacterial properties. Oregano Oil is known for its effectiveness against different parasites and bacteria. Before giving this oil to your dog topically, it must be diluted in Coconut Oil or Sweet Almond Oil.
Lavender is a popular calming fragrance because of its calming properties. Aside from being excellent in aromatherapy,the oil produced from Lavender makes a great essential oil that can help treat different skin issues, reduce inflammation, and more. Lavender Oil is effective against ringworm infections and other fungal issues. This oil also works fast in treating fungal problems.
Calendula is also used for ringworm infections. This essential oil doesn’t cause irritation or pain to sensitive skin but do note that it is needed to dilute it in a carrier oil. Not only is Calendula effective in treating ringworm infection in dogs, it also promotes healing of wounds.
Technically, Aloe Vera is not an essential oil. But this plant and its extractcontain soothing properties that can help get rid of ringworm and other fungal infections. Aloe Vera can be used on inflamed skin and may be applied to the skin directly.
Prevent the Spread of Ringworm Infection
While it is easy to treat, it is still important to prevent the spread of ringworm. As soon as you find out that your Bulldog has ringworm, make sure to isolate him in one room where there is no carpet or anything where the fungi can live in. Clean your Bulldog’s bedding and using essential oils on it to kill the fungi, or simply get rid of it. Make sure to clean rugs, carpets, and furniture regularly.
